Glasgow Junior Championships under 15s & 19s

Glasgow and North Strathclyde Group organise these championships annually. We would like to thank all the players, volunteers, court officials and spectators who support the tournament.

2018 Competition Report

This year there were some fantastic matches with 49 of the 213 matches played going to three sets! In the U19 events the finals were contested by only eight players. Joshua Apiliga defeated Adam Pringle in an exciting three set match in the final of the singles and they then paired up to take the doubles title against Michael McGuire and Danny Robson in two closely contested sets.

The girls’ singles was won by Rachel Sugden who defeated Rachel Cameron. They girls were on opposite sides again in the doubles event with Rachel Sugden again being victorious with Alice Campbell when they defeated Rachel Cameron and Rachel Andrew.
In the mixed doubles the regular partnership of Adam and Rachel Andrew proved too strong for all the other couples as they beat Joshua and Rachel Sugden in the final.

In the U15 events Brooke Stalker was the only double winner.
The singles was one of the closest matches with Brooke just having the edge in defeating Keryn Swan 17-21, 21-15, 23-21.
Brooke and Keryn were then partners in the girls’ doubles and defeated Mary Kong and Vibba Raman in the final.
In the boys singles final Shaun Aamir defended his Glasgow U15 title in another 3 set match by beating Angus Meldrum 21-12, 20-22, 21-10. Angus had already had 3 more 3 set matches to reach the final!
The final of the boys’ doubles was an even closer match with the first seeds Grant Lewis and Finlay Sheriff defeating the second seeds Logan Ireland and Angus Meldrum 19-21, 21-11 25-23.
Josh Taylor and Katie Stewart had a very well deserved victory in the mixed doubles. In their quarter final they defeated the first seeds, in their semi-final they defeated the 3/4 seeds and then in the final defeated the second seeds Anthony McGuire and Brooke 21-14, 21-19.

2017 Competition Report

Jodie Black, who was unseeded in the girls’ singles took the title by beating Brooke Stalker in the final 21-18, 21-13. She then won a thrilling girls’ doubles final with her partner Jessica Robson 20-22, 21-11, 21-19. Then finally she triumphed in the mixed doubles with Isaac Weir to complete a very successful afternoon.

The boys’ singles was won by Shaun Aamir who had defeated 2nd seed Euan Campbell in the second round then 3 / 4  seed Grant Lewis  and finally another seed Lewis Hart in the final. The boys’ doubles was won by Euan Campbell and Ian Campbell.

The Under 19 boys’ singles final was again a contest between the Grimley twins, Christopher winning a hard fought battle 21-13, 22-20.
They went on to take the doubles title against Glen Lewington and Ciar Pringle.
In the girls’ singles Rachel Sugden defeated Lauren Middleton in the final but Lauren then picked up both doubles titles , winning the level doubles with Sarah Sidebottom against Rachel Andrew and Rachel Cameron.The final match proved to be the highlight of a fantastic weekend of badminton with Robbie Patterson and Lauren defeating Adam Pringle and Rachel Cameron 21-12, 19-21,21-19.

2016 Competition Report

Over the weekend we had many close and exciting matches with five players winning two events each.
A total of 15,039 points were scored and 91 hours playing time!

Double winners at U19 were Ciara Torrance, Christopher Grimley and Matthew Grimley. Ciara and Christopher had to be in top form
especially in the mixed doubles where they had some very close matches.

In the U15 age group the double winners were Callum Smith and Kenneth Cheung. Both were made to work hard in all their events and had many 3 set matches.

2015 Competition Report

Ciara Torrance won a well-deserved treble in this year's Glasgow Under 19 Championships.

She had been second seed in the singles, top seed in doubles and came through unseeded to take the mixed doubles title with Robbie Patterson. Robbie and Ciara had beaten the second seeds in their semi-final and the top seeds in the final, both in hard fought three set matches.

It also gave Robbie his second title of the day as he had already won the doubles with Calum Atterbury, beating top seeds Glen Lewington and Ciar Pringle in the final.

Ciara had already won the singles event when he beat Callum McMillan in the final earlier in the day.

The Under 15 events also produced some high class games with Alice Campbell and Kenneth Cheung both winning two titles.

Alice won the girls singles and was partnered by Erin Waddell to win the doubles event.

Kenneth, who was seeded 5/8 in the singles and 3/4 in doubles with Callum Smith came through some very close matches to win both these events. In the singles he beat Alastair Campbell (no. 1 seed) 21-19 in the third set of the final and in the doubles quarter final beat the first seeds 22-20 in the third set!

The Under 15 mixed was won by Alastair Campbell and Lauren Page.
